Class of 1945 |
On Wednesday afternoon the group gathered from all parts of the country to Knoxville, Iowa. Perhaps Colleen, Mike and Lillian from Colorado and Nebraska were at the Super 8 first. Jim and Harriett arrived from California; Sally rolled in from Illinois. Marty, Pic and Allen flew in from Florida and Rhode Island; Barb and Hal drove from Minnesota. The Hartshorns visited Betty Blake and tried to see Dorene Vercellino in their Indianola retirement home.
At 6 P.M. we met Corwin, Phyllis and Shirley at the home of John and Carolyn Kamerick. These gracious people have entertained the class for cocktails and dinner many times. We are most appreciative of these lovely evenings. We had the opportunity to “catch up” with everyone’s health, travels and families as well as remembering those who were not there. Nearly one-half of our class is deceased. We were thankful for Ken’s daughter’s note regarding his recent death.
Thursday brought varied activities. Walking, visiting, golfing and lunch at the Swamp Fox (where sweet potato fries are served with butter and brown sugar!!). In the afternoon it was a bridge game at the motel. It took Hal, Barb and Sally to beat Colleen and Mike. Fortunately, it was interrupted by the arrival of the Palmers and the Rineharts. So good to see them.
Thursday dinner was served at the Pella Country Club in a room of our own. It was a great evening with picture taking and good food. Those Iowa pork chops were enormous.
Breakfast at Mr. C’s on Friday morning was the finale. After many hugs and promises to return in two years we parted with special thanks to Jim, Barb and the Kamericks for their efforts to make this reunion possible. It seem “we can go home again”.
May God bless and allow us to return in two years.
